“Little Avengers” Pre-K and Kindergarten Program:   This is the second season of the “Little Avengers” program for Pre-K and Kindergarten age players.    It was a great success last year attracting over 60 participants.  This year Coventry will be adding their own Pre-k and Kindergarten program based in Coventry.   East Greenwich will continue to have one in EG too.

As an instructional program for boys and girls, this group will meet once per week on Saturday afternoons with a time and location to be announced.    Most of the youth coaching staff will be on hand to provide skill development and instruction.     We want this to be a fun introduction to lacrosse so there will be skill stations each week to make it challenging and exciting.

As a reminder, no equipment purchase is necessary for this level.   We will be supplying your son or daughter a stick that is theirs to keep.
You should expect to hear about this program during the first week in April.

RECREATIONAL TEAMS (Boys and Girls 1st/2nd, 3rd/4th, 5th/6th, and 7th/8th Grades): At these grade levels we offer our traditional recreational team format.    Everyone who comes out is guaranteed a spot on the team.   We do our best to give each player equal playing time.   No score is kept and there are no playoffs.   The recreational format is a great environment to learn the game of lacrosse if you are new to the game.   It is also a high tempo atmosphere for experienced players too.    Each year our recreational teams do well within our state-wide league.   Your coach will contact you prior to the start of the season in the beginning of April for pre-game practices.

COMPETITVE TEAMS (Boys and Girls 5th/6th and 7th/8th Grades):    EGLAX is a member of the  Rhode Island Youth Lacrosse League (RIYLL) which is the governing body for all youth lacrosse in the entire state of Rhode Island.   Last year the league unanimously approved the formation of a competitive format for boys at these grade levels.    All of our EGLAX competitive teams reached the playoffs in 2009.   The 5th/6th team won the state championship and the 7th8th team reached the final .

For the 2010 season, the girls 5th/6th and 7th/8th grades will have competitive teams too!

We believe this continues to be an exciting option in the rapid growth of youth lacrosse in Rhode Island.   Here is how it works.

Competitive Teams have published scores and standings. Our traditional recreational teams will continue to exist too.    All players are guaranteed a spot on a recreational team and can also choose to play at this level instead of attempting to secure a roster spot on the competitive team.   Players wishing to participate on a competitive team are selected.    All players who want to try out for competitive or want to play recreational at each grade level will practice together during the pre-season.   Impartial evaluators will be at several pre-season practices giving all players interested in making a competitive team plenty of opportunity to showcase their talents. They will be evaluating each interested player’s catching, throwing, shooting, strong hand, weak hand, dodging, cradling, and checking skills to name a few.   Additionally, a player’s athletic ability, field awareness, team-orientation, potential and attitude will be key factors too. Approximately, 1 to 1 ½ weeks prior to the opening 2010 season in April the competitive and recreational teams will be announced.   For the boys we expect to have two recreational and one competitive team at the 5th/6th and 7th/8th grade levels for boys.   For the girls we expect to have one recreational and one competitive team 5th/6th and 7th/8th grade levels.

All players who are chosen for the competitive team are expected to make this the highest priority in terms of all spring sports they play.     This means attending all practices and games.    If you cannot make this type of commitment then the recreational team may be your best option.

Any boy who made a competitive team in 2009 will have to try out for a competitive team in 2010.    Making a competitive team in 2009 does not guarantee you a spot on a compeitive team in 2010.

Pre-season practices and evaluations for the competitive teams will start at the beginning of March 2010.
